How much does SEO cost in Australia?
The honest range is wide, and the monthly figure tells you less than you’d think. What matters is what the money buys, and who is actually doing the work.

Most Australian SEO retainers sit between $1,000 and $5,000 a month
In my experience, most small and medium Australian businesses pay between $1,000 and $5,000 a month for an ongoing SEO retainer. Where a business lands in that range usually comes down to three things: the size of the website, how competitive the market is, and how much senior strategy sits behind the work.
A price outside that range isn’t automatically wrong. But a quote well below it deserves a close look at who is doing the work, and a quote well above it should come with a scope that explains why.
What a survey of 439 SEO providers shows
Independent data on Australian SEO pricing is thin, so the most useful large dataset is global. Ahrefs polled 439 SEO providers from around the world and manually checked every respondent’s website to confirm they genuinely sold SEO. Converted to Australian dollars:
About $4,170
The average monthly retainer.
63%
Fell between about $715 and $7,150 a month.
About $715 to $1,430
The single most common monthly tier, charged by 20.4% of respondents.
About $2,230
The average for local SEO.
78.2%
Charged a monthly retainer, well ahead of per-project (48.9%) and hourly (34.8%) pricing.
August 2024
When the survey was last updated, so treat the figures as the shape of the market rather than a local price list.
These are converted US-dollar figures, not Australian data. What transfers well is the pattern underneath them.
Price tracks experience, and the gap is wide
The survey split providers three ways, and the differences are large:
Freelancers
About $1,930 a month on average.
Agencies
About $4,590 a month on average, 138% more than freelancers.
Consultancies
About $4,650 a month on average.
Ahrefs calculated these three averages from price bands, using the top of each band, so treat them as upper estimates. The gap between them is the point.
Experience mattered just as much. Providers with more than two years in business charged about a third more than newer ones, and those in business for five to ten years averaged about $5,220 a month, more than double the rate of providers in their first two years.
That gap isn’t a premium for tenure. It’s the price of judgement: knowing which pages are worth the effort, which fixes will move revenue and which tactics to leave alone. It’s the same reason a senior tradesperson costs more per hour than an apprentice. You’re not paying for the time. You’re paying for the mistakes that don’t happen.
Compare quotes on what they buy, not the monthly figure
Two quotes at the same price can buy very different things. Before you compare them, ask:
Who will manage the account day to day?
And is that the person you’re speaking to now?
How many other clients do they look after?
That tells you how much of their time your account will actually get.
What gets reported?
Rankings, or enquiries, sales and revenue?
Is there a lock-in contract?
And what does it cost to leave?
Is GST included?
Check whether the price is quoted including or excluding GST.
Would they answer all of this plainly?
A provider confident in their pricing will.
What a low monthly fee usually pays for
The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest outcome. A low fee has to be made to work somehow, and it’s worth asking how: more accounts per person, less senior time on each one, or reporting that measures rankings rather than revenue. None of that shows up on the invoice.
This is the problem DBC Solutions is built to avoid. Your SEO and AI visibility work is handled personally by a co-founder, from strategy through to implementation, and you are never handed to a junior account manager after the sale. We take on a limited number of clients so that stays true. Engagements are month to month, because we earn your business every month.
What senior judgement looks like in practice
For a bathroom supplier with three showrooms and national eCommerce, we concentrated SEO on page-two product and category pages with high-volume search terms, to fast-track gains. The work contributed to 390% growth in non-brand organic traffic and formed part of a connected strategy that increased eCommerce revenue by 32%.
For a specialist obstetrician in one of medicine’s most competitive categories, authority-focused SEO built on high-quality link building and service content reached page one for a highly competitive specialty term and grew non-brand traffic by 103%.
The common thread is focus: deciding where the effort will pay off commercially, then putting it there. See the full case studies.
Common questions about SEO costs
Is cheap SEO ever worth it?
For a narrow, well-defined job, it can be. For ongoing strategy, it’s rarely a real saving. In the Ahrefs survey, lower prices went hand in hand with less experience, which is worth weighing against what you save each month.
How much should a small business in Australia spend on SEO?
Most small and medium Australian businesses pay between $1,000 and $5,000 a month. For comparison, the Ahrefs survey put local SEO at an average of about $2,230 a month. The right figure depends on your market, your website and what a new customer is worth to you, so start with the commercial goal and work back to the budget.
Should I choose a monthly retainer or a one-off project?
Most providers (78.2% in the Ahrefs survey) work on a monthly retainer, because SEO compounds over time rather than finishing. A one-off project suits a defined job such as a technical audit or a site migration.
How long does SEO take to show results?
Early technical and content wins can land in the first month, but meaningful movement in rankings, AI citations and organic revenue usually builds over 3 to 12 months, depending on your starting point and how competitive your market is. Factor that timeline in when you compare monthly costs.
How can I tell whether a quote includes genuine senior expertise?
Ask who will manage the account day to day, whether that’s the person you’re speaking to now, and how many other clients they’re responsible for. The answers tell you more than the price does.
